UMANG SHAH:

Working at the intersection of fine art and architectural inquiry, my work investigates how memory and cultural identity can be physically mapped onto a surface. My practice relies on a fluid process of layering and transparency, utilizing a diverse material reserve that includes acrylic, charcoal, ink, and printed global newspapers, and occasionally other materials. The integration of multilingual text introduces structural, typographic textures that challenge traditional spatial boundaries, creating an interplay between the visible and hidden. This methodology allows me to navigate multiple subjectivities negotiating my American upbringing, my Indian heritage, and the structural discipline of an architect. The final works serve as psychological landscapes, capturing specific states of mind and inviting viewers to unearth their own narratives within the layers.
